Docs issues killing travis on MAC

hey there @nkorinek it looks like we have an issue with our docs that is causing dep updates to fail
i know you are busy with HDR edsc stuff but when you have time it would be good to get this cleared up!
you can see that the past few PRs to update deps have failed probably all because of this - example below:
