I want to know how can I contribute to the project
so that my propositions have a format suited for team collaboration

I would like to know if it is possible to add 2 new features;
- the possibility to append extra elements to the status bar by not changing the config files.
- add different contrast levels like in here https://github.com/hasundue/tmux-gruvbox-material

Quick answer for you:
Point 1: Yes, good news for you - this is already planned. Ta da, better news! Currently, this feature is already implemented and awaits further tests in the release/v2-0-0` branch. Feel free to try it out.
Point 2: When I start to work on expanding customization for statusbar #31 and adding 16-bit colors #34, this was exactly my idea to add contrasts/flavors e.g.L "hard", "medium", "light". Exactly the same way like with the original gruvbox theme from https://github.com/morhetz/gruvbox. I will create a ticket to add contrasts (dark & light).
