the CHANGES.txt needs to be updated with a small description of the various improvements in 0.8. @mrijken, perhaps you can summarize your changes in a few bullet points?

I've tweaked it a bit to make it ready for the release. I really do appreciate a bit more verbosity in either the change notes or a link to the place in the documentation -- I've gone for the latter. (unfortunately this often requires a sphinx build on readthedocs before the link can be made, as inline links shouldn't be made due to changes also appearing on pypi)
