Use remote sensor input or local sensor when mqtt broker offline

Would it be possible to send the current room temperature to the thermostat remotely over mqtt and then if that fails use the local sensor?
I'm using an average of two external sensors to get my actual temperature but would like to have a fall back plan if the mqtt broker goes down.
