Regarding inline text formatting

I had a bit of a doubt. I needed to insert some markdown at some points but the technique im using isnt working & ive got no clue why. I wanted to know if theres an inline text formatting function available somewhere so I can take its help, reference it & do so myself. I could find it for blocks, wherein node.data is used to format that but I need something for inline.
