Extracting partition files to EXFAT drive creates an img file that needs room for "free space"

I was surprised, when I used the clonezilla-util.exe extract-partition-image
command, that I needed storage space that exceeded the size of the original source drive for the output files. It seems the img file is not created as a "sparse" file. In other words, I needed room for what was free space on the source drive. Is there any way to create an img file that does not recreate free space?
The img file generated is more than double the total size of all the clonezilla gz files.

Hi Distance,
The program generates a sparse file, but only on NTFS drives. Is your drive NTFS?
Another option might be to turn on Folder Compression on the folder you're extracting to.
Cheers,
