How are quality bits handled?

Multiple protocols contain quality status indications (for example: IEC-104 & IEC 61850). How are these health bits obtained, processed and forwarded?

Example: 104 supports a heath bit (also known as quality bits).
It can be solved by an additional data point dedicated to the quality bit.
