Install of the tools on some servers?

Closed this issue · 5 comments

Is it possible to get a working install of the python tools (at least those not requiring mayavi) on some servers? I think of voima login, eslogin, crystal in particular, maybe elukka too but less important. How difficult is it?

I'm not sure. I tried to get the python tools to work on Voima/Elukka at some point but I had problems installing MayaVi's dependencies (VTK or python-VTK if I remember it correctly). I didn't try too long, though. We could try to check crystal.

As I said, even without mayavi would be a good start. This is mostly for uses when one is away and cannot afford to run things over sshfs. Having a "standalone" version on a server with data allows to quickly generate visualisations even when somewhere else. This is the kind of things I wanted to do yesterday for example and over VPN+sshfs it just took ages.

You can also ask helpdesk if you need specific packages/libraries, they can do a clean install instead of you patching up things that could come as packages (if they can come as packages).

For many things, perhaps even most, mayavi is not needed.

At least not for remote off-screen rendering indeed.
