Access to email from Thunderbird is very slow, taking sometimes over 20 minutes to receive messages

I am accessing my email address using Thunderbird as recommended by the developers of forwademail, but the email is really slow to download new emails and take any action like marking emails as read/unread or moving emails to folders. When sending emails, a lot of times thunderbird says that the email has been sent but it hasn´t been possible to save it in the sent folder, and I have to retry multiple times or save it locally.
Checklist
- I have searched through GitHub issues for similar issues.
- I have completely read through the README and documentation.
Please let me know if this is not the right place to open this defect, happy to reopen it in the right repository.
I also see this behaviour , via imap. Both in thunderbird (desktop) and K9 (soon to be thunderbird) on mobile
Is nobody from the forwardemail team going to explain what is happening here and if there is any plan to fix this huge performance issue? I understand this is an open-source project, but we are paying for this service, so I would expect a bit of commitment from the forwardemail team to at least explain what is going on!
Hi there - as mentioned in Matrix chat (which is more real-time than GitHub issues) - we are working on IMAP optimizations.
@titanism thanks for the info, how can we access that Matrix chat to learn about the progress?
@heisenberg2980 The link is available in the dropdown on our website under Resources
Hum, that looks new. 1st tried it on a phone , it was just "clickbait" tried to get me to "install an app" (AKA turn over control of your phone to us ..and we'll empty any bank accounts we find) next I tried on a Desktop, here it suggested "Thunderbird" , far more reasonable. The instructions say :
Open the Chat tab, click on 'Join Chat' and paste the identifier or type /join #forwardemail:matrix.org in an existing Matrix conversation.
(I was unaware of the "chat" tab on Thunderbird ...[Yet Another Instant Messenger... oh howI long for the day of internet standards ...sigh. Anyhow
Click in "chat" ..."You haven't set up a chat account yet" (so more data harvesting to come I guess)
Choose "Network" .. a wild guess "Matrix" ... username and server of your Matrix account ...and there it ends.
@graemev did you have specific ID for this email from My Account → Emails or more information?
@graemev Matrix is a chat protocol (similar to old school IRC) – you can use any client such as Element or SchildiChat (Thunderbird has a built-in client but we don't recommend it). You can stay completely anonymous and simply use a username if you wish to join there. Many customers that have had issues have found it easier to communicate with us over real-time chat as opposed to email or GitHub issues. Happy to help here or via email to figure out why the delays occur. All the apps listed from the Matrix chat link are completely open-source - they're not out to get your bank account!
These issues should be resolved now. If you continue to have errors or slowness let us know of the specific error code you receive (e.g. connection timeout) and as much detail/screenshots you can provide (email works best, send direct to support@forwardemail.net
).
