Topic: casual contributing to a project

As a casual contributor (like a small bugfix or patch), it can sometimes feel daunting when the maintainer asks for test scripts, documentation, additional fixes for other platforms etc. Sometimes you just want to "do the right thing" and submit a fix, but are not able to invest a lot of time getting involved in the project. How can/should project maintainers handle such cases?
I had similar problems when I had customers paying me to provide code and the maintainers asked for a lot of additional functionality to accept the code, instead of adding a ticket for enhancement in the backlog and accepting the new functions. My customer got upset and decided to stay away from trying to contribute in the future.
It's complicated.
