Unable to install Kodi on SL.

I am not a PC newbie and yet I have been completely unable to install Kodi on Steamlink via USB thumb drives. The boot process takes the same amount of time before attempt of install or after this makes no difference. I would assume that Kodi is not installing due to that and the fact no Kodi on the home screen after boot up. I have tried the basic stuff to get it working. I have tried the below steps on 3 different flash drives and all freshly formatted to make sure there were no issues. I have utilized 2 different formatting utilities. with no luck. The utilities that I have tried is Windows 10 format and Rufus; The format tried is FAT32.
Download the latest release from https://github.com/garbear/kodi-steamlink/releases.
Copy archive to the folder steamlink/apps/ on a USB drive (FAT32 or EXT4).
Insert the drive into the Steam Link and power-cycle. It will take approximately 2 minutes to install the 80MB archive.
When the Steam Link boots, Kodi should appear on the home screen.
I had some problems too to install Kodi.
I discovered that on the 3 usb key that I tried, only one is acutally working, and only if I format it in Ext4. Maybe you should give it a try.
Then, using the "normal" shutdown/startup procedure using the steam controller did not seems to trigger the install: I had to unplug the power chord from the steam link and plug it in again.
Also I made the mistake of extracting the archive instead of just copying it....
Well in the world of IT power cycle means yank the power cord and wait long enough to allow residual power to drain from the components when possible. I know not to extract the tar archive; just place it in the steamlink\apps\ directory as is. I figured I would attempt this all again using Ext4 file system. I also failed to mention I tried all of this on public and beta releases. I will post back once I have tried the other method. I appreciate that you took the time to post a reply and try to help; I will keep everyone posted.
Same deal no luck with Ext4 either. I tried 14 different USB ports and 7 different USB flash drives from generic to name brands. This is becoming to be a real pain and I still have the Steam Audio driver update issue of controller input broken once Steamlink connects to PC. Anyone out there that has a working solution please chip in. I have also re d/l the file multiple times and tried two different versions. I have formatted 3 of the drives on a completely different PC. I am to the point if I was not living in town I would take my 40 and my Handycam an then unleash hell on this buggy device.
This is quite interesting. For me it worked at the first try with a cheap 1gb usb stick and FAT32. The "problem" I had was that the boot process never finished but after waiting for 5 min I power-cycled again and it was installed and working.
I figured out the problem with installing Kodi and a few other issues. My issue was related to the SL firmware being stuck on v 496 regardless of choosing public or beta. Had to manually update to v661 via USB and now Kodi installed as it should have from the beginning.
Now I have to resolve the remaining issues with this pos device. Wired or wireless connection seems to only connect to the LAN and not the internet. This is odd because all other wireless devices on my network connect to the internet fine; and no the router settings mac address filtering etc. is off. If I just bypass this issue and connect via Cat5 in Kodi the repo still failed to connect. When I manually add more repos in the sources then choose ad dons and open from zip select that newly added source I still get nothing listed. I did not have this issue with the orig Kodi which was XBMC running on gen 1 Xboxes.
Not sure if this project is still active. I am also unable to install. I have tried with Ext4 and FAT32 USB sticks. 8GB and 4GB. Tried with Stable 807 Steamlink build as well as 820 beta build. I insert the stick, power cycle (both through the menu and yanking the cord out), and steam link boots as normal. No action, no change.
Sorry, project isn't active anymore, as Kodi's CPU requirements have risen and the SL isn't getting more powerful. If you're interested in the code I can support experimentation.
