I know there are meny things in the background, but... maybe you could check this project https://github.com/Tomas-M/xlunch. I alredy ported it to FreeBSD without problems and I think this could be an interesting feature to add in fewer code lines using the same libraries.

I appreciate the suggestion! It's a pretty sweet launcher. However, what application launcher you use is up to you - at the moment you adjust this by editing the config.h file. I'll add a wiki article this weekend going over configuration in more detail.
