This is some text in a file with a null character \u0000 any text after the null character will be stripped.

Yep - confirmed bug.
Reproduced by inserting a null character into a ruby file (as per this method http://dailyvim.blogspot.com/2009/10/ctrl-v-for-literal-characters.html), then saving the file.
