It's important for the tool to prominently display whether there are unread Notifications or unread Talk messages for the user. If the user's edits are getting reverted, or if someone is leaving messages on their user talk, it's important for the user to be aware so they can defuse any potential conflict. If the user is unaware and they keep making more edits the situation may escalate badly, possibly resulting in anger between editors or even resulting in a block.
