TLDR: We are not cleaning up the data created during test run in the tearDown
method and that is causing it to be flaky.
In current test implementation, we are querying the data using readTime of 15 second in the past. Time between creating the entity and querying it would be negligible(compared to 15 seconds), In that case if we query the snapshot of 15 seconds before, we should get nothing as there was nothing created 15 seconds ago(and that's what exactly happening when this test fails).
Now why test is passing,? It's because it is querying the residue data left by the previous test runs giving us the wrong impression.
Why it fails?
clean db ----> test creates entity --after 1 second--> test query data of 15 second ago ----> gets []empty results
Why it passes intermittently
db with stale data ----> test creates entity(upsert operation) --after 1 second--> test query data of 15 second ago ----> receives stale data (as it did exist 15 seconds ago)
