Partitioning of kafka route is not consistent

I created a carbon-relay-ng instance which feeds a Kafka cluster on the topic mdm which has 8 partitions. Then I used fakemetrics to generate 1 metric and submit it to crng at an interval of 1sec.
When tcpdumping the traffic and looking at it in Wireshark I can see that the partition assignments change on every message:
