Dist folder alternatives?

Do I have to version a dist folder? Isn't there any alternative? Thanks!

We've been following a new method where the dist folder is pushed into a release branch, then use the commit hash for the branch.

It's not mandatory to do that, but the dist folder needs to exist somewhere.
