litex bios build fails with a missing directory error

During the lambdasoc build process for LunaSoC the build will fail with a missing directory error:

soc/lambdasoc.soc.cpu/bios/3rdparty/litex

This is likely an upstream error but requires some more investigation before an issue can be opened.
