Fdroid: non free asset flag
Closed this issue · 14 comments
Hey,
I think the app should have the "non free assets" flag on fdroid, since the memes are not available under a free license. I havent checked where the zip meme file is downloaded, but when it's github, you should also add the "non free network" flag.
It had it previously, but was removed (by intention) when assets where removed from the app itself.
The app itself doesnt contain and depend on non-free stuff. You can use it completley without downloading the memetastic-assets
-zip package, therefore nonfree flag is not needed.
Now (and planned to keep this) the app does not contain nonfree stuff. The bundled templates are from https://openclipart.org and the pressuru font is under oss compatible license.
Non free Addons (17 list) – the application promotes other non-Free apps or plugins
from https://f-droid.org/wiki/page/AntiFeatures
I think the app does promote the memetastic-assets-zip package:
- In the second sentence in the description
- In every screenshot in fdroid
- In the "Download latest assests" popup in first start
I couldnt find the prebundled "bad luck brian" meme on openclipart.org. According to wikipedia the picture comes from a highschool yearbook. I'm not a copyright expert, but usually the school pays for the photographer, so the school is the copyright holder?
PS: Please dont get me wrong. I really like your app, since it works, is oss and fills another gap in the fdroid catalog, but it should be tagged correctly.
Maybe this should be discussed here: https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroiddata

nono
Found that single bad-bluck-brian file too (though I really removed all of them) - after last comment it was removed and replaced by two other (cc0 / public domain) graphics. This change is included in latest update (together with translation updates and small fixes) - v1.3.2
F-Droid:
- Non-Free Assets (12 list) – the application contains non-free assets
- Nope
- Non free Addons (17 list) – the application promotes other non-Free apps or plugins
- Nope - no addon, app or plugin, and nothing to install, just pure graphic/font file assets - (in meaning of no promoted nonfree software)
It had tagged nonfree-assets before, but was removed was removed back then https://gitlab.com/fdroid/fdroiddata/merge_requests/2616 when memetastic got useable just with own files.
In terms of what is possible: I think more freedom than GPL + public domain graphics + ask to manually confirm to download a foss developer controlled file is not possible for this.
just pure graphic/font file assets
I'm not sure if that might count as "addon".

True. Maybe you add for the fdroid version "from github" to the download dialog, so the user knows that this feature depends on non-free network services.

than pretty much everything would have to be tagged as such, as most apps on fdroid have code, graphics and stuff there :D (And too: it does not depend on it, as you can use the app fully without these images)
Yes, but most apps have everything in the apk which is built and distributed by fdroid, not github. So github never knows who uses the app. In this case, the pictures are downloaded from github, so it knows about the user.
The apl doesnt depend on the images, but promote them.
Maybe you could ask for further advice in the F-Droid forums? Just my 2 cents :P
Good idea, opened a thread here: https://forum.f-droid.org/t/should-memetastic-be-flagged-with-anit-features-flags/2040
i asked another maintainer (before lonamis comment) - but everybodys on FOSDEM ;)
With the update from today the app includes a picture of obama and a drawing of mr bean. I doubt the latter is free.
Obama pic from wikipedia. Should be fine:
This image is a work of an employee of the Executive Office of the President of the United States, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.
But Mr. Bean:

Mr Bean TM and © Tiger Aspect Productions Ltd 2018. All Rights reserved.
I dont know how this comes to your mind, but thats a libre mimic drawing that may mimic somebody. It's not copy-pasted from some homepage, movie, media or something else. The (very much openclipart contributing) drawer/artist gave this graphic out with the librest license out there - public domain. https://openclipart.org/share. If you think he did something wrong contact openclipart and the artist.
I give the topics "fair use" and "free speech" if thats not enough to argue.
Sadly, 100% libre with a clear open license meme images are not too widespread. I could sketch something myself and make it open…:
I will remove the drawing too again and include freedom sunflower kid (100% libre and drawn pixel by pixel by myself). This will to be available in the next memetastic version.
…but I doubt that can be used at all to make any good meme. Leave alone using popular memes, which would be completely left out of the application.
@mueller-ma If you want to further help the project, please suggest royal, libre and stated complete free graphics that may be used currently already somewhere as a meme template - (excluding rage b/w sketches).
