Owl for Exchange: no new mail notifications

Description
Thunderbird and Exchange.
Previously we used "ExQuilla for Exchange", and Birdtray worked as expected.
Recently we switched to the newer "Owl for Exchange" (by the same developer), and now no new messages are recognized.

ExQuilla used to store its messages below
$PROFILE/ExQuilla/<servername>
while Owl uses
$PROFILE/webaccountMail/<servername>
but the structure below it seems to be identical.
obviously is the same, since it is the same Exchange account.

I've reset everything countless times, selecting all folders again and
$HOME/.config/birdtray-config.json
correctly shows all folders being in
$PROFILE/webaccountMail/<servername>
and yet, no "New messages" notifications.

Since the old
$PROFILE/ExQuilla/<servername>
still exists beside
$PROFILE/webaccountMail/<servername>
is it possible that Birdtray somehow confuses both folders? Strips the parent path and hits the first (natural sort order) subfolder, that belongs to the no longer updated ExQuilla account?
