Query about protocols on the TD5

Hello!
I realise this is an old project....but you may know the answer!

There seems to be some uncertainty online as to whether, to get any data from the TD5, you can use any standards compliant ODBII protocol, or whether the (I think?) proprietary commands you have implemented are needed?

Is this a case of there being two ways of accessing the same information...?

The two cables out there seem to be:

VAG K+CAN variants
and
elm327

So far as I can see, the ELM327 adds a layer of abstraction between the car and the PC, and so won't work with this project. Some of the VAFG K+CAN variants don't, meaning you have direct control of the comms - and this project can then work.

The difference seems to be "if there is a PIC inside the housing, there is abstraction, and it won't work"...?
