The word I find needing an explanation most often to people unfamiliar with machine learning is undoubtedly... feature :)

To completely non-technical people, they go "oh, characteristic then, right?" or "oh ok, 'column'". Both of which aren't quite right, but are close enough.

To technical people from other fields (particularly mathematics I suppose) they go "oh.. dimension" or the like. Again not quite right but close enough :)
