x230: Trying to boot from USB does nothing, returns to menu

It just blinks for a split second, and returns straight to the boot options menu.
Tried different USB keys, ports ... No luck.
Fully charged original battery.
My current bios is G2ETB3WW (2.73), EC 1.14.
Running "legacy first" mode, ...

this may happen if your boot mode is set to uefi only and the usb key is not uefi. does the usb boot any other pc if you try? its either usb or boot mode (uefi), you may want to try other boot modes (legacy only) and see if it works.
this exact thing happened when i had the boot mode set to uefi
