@nschum would that work? The problem is that on 10.10 (and possibly some 10.9's) it doesn't show that "do you want to install Java?" dialog, but rather just tells you to download an installer from support.apple.com, but sometimes even that doesn't appear, the app just dies instantly. I had a report from 10.9.4 that Hive wasn't starting, didn't say anything at all, and started working after the user installed Java manually.

From a Radar response:

We have intentionally made the process of obtaining Java SE 6 a manual one to dissuade users from obtaining it. If developers need to use Java in their applications, they need to bundle that Java 7, 8, or 9 JRE from Oracle in their application. This may also enable it to be vended via the Mac App Store, since it will be a self-contained unit.

That's annoying. One more reason to try Avian.
