Lost Password

Opened this issue · 3 comments

Hello everyone,

Some years ago I setup a wallet with Hive on OSX, and I forgot the password used for it.
I was able to restore from a previous backup the entire user folder that has a working Hive already authenticated, so opening Hive shows me the wallet content without asking for any password.

If I try to move the funds to a different wallet, I need the password. Is there any way to recover it from the app?

I'm currently running btcrecovery on the wallet, but I was hoping there is a faster way through the app.

Any suggestions are appreciated, and I'll happily make a generous donation on success.

Best!

Hi,

it's been a while since I've looked at the app or the code, but from what I can see, there was a checkbox "don't show this again" on the lock screen where you entered the password at startup; if you've checked this and unlocked the wallet, it would stop showing the lock screen, but that was the only change - it only remembered that it should not nag you about the password at startup, but it didn't save the password anywhere (it would be too dangerous). So I'm afraid the keys are still encrypted with that password and there's no way to get them out without knowing or guessing it...

The only way around it that I can think of is if you initially used some early version of Hive that let you use it without setting a password, and you could dig out the earliest possible backup before you set the password, but if you started at version 1.0 or later then I think you had to set the password during the setup wizard.

Thanks Mackuba. The wallet was created on the latest version available in July 2014, so that means the password was set during setup wizard.
