Error with missing description

I'll leave out an example for now, but this line seems to assume that there are descriptions. At least, my error went away when adding a description to on of the toplevel menu entries. Do you assume a description is mandatory? It does not say "optional" in the docs, so it seems to be the case, but I'd suggest giving a better error message and adding "mandatory" to the doc entry.
