Describe the bug

When running mdformat 0.7.16 on the Markdown (with footnotes)

Ref. [^abc].

[^abc]: Lorem ipsum

it'll produce

Ref. \[^abc\].

\[^abc\]: Lorem ipsum

That's incorrect. Note that this behavior only occurs if there's a space in the footnote. This

Ref. [^abc].

[^abc]: Loremipsum

works fine.

Python 3.11.

(Hint: Perhaps it'd be useful to provide a mdformat --show-env command that lists all related packges and version that people could copy-and-paste here.)
