A couple of items to cover regarding visible tabs.
If tabs are converted to spaces, they're no longer a tab and so the cm-tab class used in editor.php no longer acts as a selector and so it doesn't show the left border etc.
The other issue is that the border is set to be white. This is only useful on darker themes and we need to handle dark or light themes.
