Importing/exporting translations

It would be nice to be able to import and export translations (for example in po format) in order to integrate into a traditional translation workflow.
Has anyone done this and have some snippets to share?
I guess one could do that based on dumpdata and loaddata commands, but having out of the box commands would be useful.
