VSIX Installer failing when downloading through Visual Studio and when downloading in browser and installing

When installing the VSIX package, either through Visual Studio or by downloading it in the browser and installing it, a NullReferenceException is thrown during the installation and a dailog box appears saying: "Object Reference not set to an instance of an object."
