New to Github. Wish to try to run this on OS X (Yosemite ) which supports Python but would welcome any advice as how to best go about this and in particular issues of getting dependencies etc. Should the standard Linux install mechanism work?

Install homebrew:
http://brew.sh/

brew install python

http://docs.python-guide.org/en/latest/starting/install/osx/

sudo easy_install pip
pip install gsync
