How to change the slug for blog posts

By default posts are located at example.com/blog/slug, how do I make the posts to be at example.com/slug. I need this to prevent broken links to my old posts. And also, what file do I need to edit to make the slug dependent only on the title (or even a custom slug) and not the title and the date.
