Bulk rename fails when using mate-terminal on Manjaro Linux

Using any version of the mate-terminal running on Manjaro with the latest updates and nnn v4.9. Select files to rename, press 'r' and instead of a current/select prompt, 'fail' is returned.
Works OK with other terminal emulators such as Alacritty and XTerm..

the problem probably lies in your environment, look into what is diffing in your env in your respective terminals

This appears to be a local environment issue, at least till someone else also reports the same.
Unfortunately, we don't have the bandwidth to support local issues.
