currentBuild.description doesn't update until very end of job

I would like to be able to set the currentBuild.description of a job at the very beginning of that job. But the current behavior is that it shows the last build's description until the very end of this build, which means that for the vast majority of the job's duration, it shows the wrong data. I would love to see that description be able to update much sooner.
