pytest-runner is deprecated upstream due to e.g. breaking some Pip features

Happy to take a merge request but I'm unlikely to get to this within the next few weeks.
Actually - this weekend is clear, I'll look at this today and if it's easy I'll release it and if not I'll post an update here and someone else can do it if they have free time. I think this change and a few others that have been a long time coming aren't too bad.
I have a fix, alongside some other things with the dev workflow that were bothering me, here:
