i got this error when i went to add a resource pack

This seems more like a bug in Java itself, bug report here and this issue looks like it's the same thing. Try updating your Java install.

ive used java 8 and java 18 arcive and they both have the same error
The fix was only made in April so there may not be any easily accessible java versions with the fix yet.
In this case where they were able to debug it, it was caused by MEGAsync. So possibly if you have that or other 3rd party cloud sync programs, uninstalling them might help.
Only other suggestion is to try running jmc with this java flag set java -Djava.util.Arrays.useLegacyMergeSort=true -jar jmc2obj.jar
