Convert image to 8bit color depth instead find a equivalency from 16,32...

First of all congratulations for your awesome work.

To simplify the process of select the apropiate color for a asii character,

Wouldn't be better if the process change the bit-color depth of the image to 8 instead to match from 16, 32. This could be achieved by opencv.
