Convert and clean up utility notebooks

The old SVN repository contained a few utility notebooks and scripts (in ./util) which were dropped in the migration to git. These were used mostly to generate the data files. They would be useful to have for future use. However, these notebooks need to be ported to Python 3, cleaned up and checked before.
