trackpad buttons are "sticky" on macbook

Using a macbook, when I tap to add a note and then move the cursor without holding down the button, it usually continues to add notes as if I were clicking and dragging. I see the same problem when removing notes and selecting. Sometimes if I pause for long enough between clicking and moving it behaves correctly, and it always behaves correctly if I click outside the note area (e.g. to jump to a time).
