Possible to pause while loading

Silly bug, not a soft lock or anything but can be confusing - if paused during load sequence, the screen remains black because the fade is drawn over the UI. User must unpause to continue fade-in. This may be because the fade is tied to timestep update (which is paused when ... well, paused!)
