Question: Why is automated refreshing lists disabled by default?

Opened this issue · 1 comments

Coming from using adblockers for a very long time, I could not imagine any of them coming with list refreshing disabled by default.

Why is period refreshing of lists disabled by default?

Does that simply not defeat the purpose of the application to provide a means of blocking the latest and greatest ad and tracking threats?

Since the sources are provided by third parties, refreshing them will reveal your IP address to them, so refreshing is disabled by default to protect your privacy.

Especially since automatic refresh was added after the initial release, enabling it for existing users would have felt incorrect, and mechanisms to enable it for new ones only weren't around.

I feel the answer is to ask you on first run, having this opt-in but easily discoverable and guided.
