It would be great to have this upgraded to d3 version 4.x

I recall attempting to do that once. I quickly gave up because it was going to be more work than I expected. Though I can't recall why.

I gave a thumbs up to the suggestion. d3 tips and tricks has a very nice section of trees. I was looking in that reference to see how much effort it was for Malcom Maclean. It didn't look too bad at first blush. https://leanpub.com/d3-t-and-t-v4/read
I guess one issue is updating all the examples.
