Can't gain mining points

My friend and i are playing on a server with forge 1.12.2 2860 and we lastest cavern ii and can't gain any mining points when breaking blocks and we don't appear on mining records either.
how did you fix it?
I'm also having this issue, I have a pretty large modpack so I can only assume it's an incompatibility of sorts but it seems others have had this issue. It either resolved itself or they changed the config and it began working. I've tried deleting the config entirely, I've tried the fix that others have used in the config to make them work, etc. And it still does not work. So while I feel it very well could be an incompatibility it's strange that others have had the issue and managed to fix it.
EDIT: I just tried the mod on its own and it still doesn't work, not sure what the issue is at this point.
EDIT 2: For the past few hours I've been trying to downgrade and upgrade to all forge versions and versions of the mod, on all versions, the mining records pop up blank and my mining rank is stuck at 0 with no combo popping up while mining ores.
