There is no $project_name

I'm confused right from the first step:

Open the index.php file, and look for line 2, where it says: $project_name = "Project Name";
Put your own project name between the quotation marks

I do not see $project_name in the index.php

I see the issue now...I downloaded the zip from the project page which gave me the 9c78e8a Master version, not the 1253475 Bootstrap branch version.

You probably should update the path to the zip and tarball on gh-pages branch to the correct zip
