When I try the script, I just get the following aplay: playback:2483: read error

Ah, looks like the files are no longer available at the given location :( If you happen to have a copy, anywhere else they can be hosted? Perhaps include a copy in the repo?

Any reason the files couldn't just be hosted in the repo?

Of course we can technically do that, but bloating the repo is bad form. Git is for code :)
(and the script caches the files locally anyways.)

But it would mean that it will always be available and anyone who has the repo can host the files wherever they want :)
