First let me say I think what you've done here with LearnUmbraco7 on GitHub is immensely valuable.

This is strictly an opinionated answer - but I would cast my vote to move forward with how membership is done today or near future (7.3.0) over how it was done in the past. The biggest issue I've had since taking on Umbraco as a CMS platform is the wealth of outdated information (v4) code and examples when I had adopted it at a much more modern state (v7). What Umbraco needs is current documentation and resources.
