Minor point but since Dethmunk it looking at those sprites anyway...

This looks like a frame rate issue. In the attract cutscene it looks like the sand flows in one direction but in game the sand looks like it flows in the other direction.

I think this is the SPEED variable that causes a blocking wait loop in the cutscene play fn.

Fixed. Was actually in single buffered mode and drawing the effect at crazy speed without vsync. :)
