NES games saving issue

I know that most NES games don't actually have any battery backed save feature and more comonly used passwords. However I started trying out some games such as Kirby's Adventure (just to name one) that do save and discovered that there is a problem with these games actually saving. I first had tried a Kirby ROM hack called Kirby's Halloween Adventure. The game would not save my progress at all despite it creating the save.srm file. I then tried the real Kirby's Adventure and had the same problem... This happened in both mesen and fecumm. It wasn't an issue with the ROM files because I then tried playing them in the standalone mesen emulator and they saved just fine (didn't use save states).
One of the other games I tried was a brand new homebrew called Witch n Wiz. It kinda saved... It created the save.srm file but after closing the game (hitting esc) and reopening it, the file select screen was all messed up and I couldn't actually select my save file. Tried it in standalone mesen and like Kirby it saved just fine.
Just a few minutes ago I tried the NES version of Alwa's Awakening and it seemed to save if I went to the pause menu and hit quit (takes you back to the main title screen) first, but if I just hit esc on the keyboard without doing that, the save is just gone, despite the save.srm file being there.
Interesting, looking into this now, thanks for the report.
I just tried with mesen + Kirby's Adventure and it saved and loaded the state properly.
Can you try again with Kirby, but delete the save.srm before, to make sure that we start from blank and not a corrupted save?
Already tried that several times. Just tried again and still nothing and even using the latest version 1.23 of Rombundler. Are you using Windows or Mac? As mentioned before I'm using Windows.
I'm on mac m1
