White balance - when custom WB fails due to low light, correct error not reliably shown

In low light, the statuswindow shows the correct error, which is that the image is too dark.
But, in very low light (ie. aperture fully closed), the statuswindow instaed complains about clipping and instructs the user to reduce exposure instead of increase it.
