"setSamplingPeriod" has no effect on proximity and light sensors

The proximity and light sensors are working great for me on Unity2019.1 and android8 (Samsung S7). Setting the update intervals for these doesn't seem to have any effect though. They both seem to update about each 500ms. I'm trying to set them to about 17ms (about 1/60 sec) to match approximately my frame rate.
Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder if some sensors update intervals are fixed by android?
